MetaSwitch
Supplies its Next Gen Class 5 Switch to Yukon Telephone
22-Apr-2003
Yukon
Telephone, an incumbent provider serving several rural towns in
Alaska, selected
MetaSwitch's VP3500 Next Generation Class 5 Switch to replace
its existing Mitel and Redcom TDM Class 5 Switches. The new switch
provides both legacy and broadband interfaces, including GR-303,
VoATM and VoIP as well as advanced Web-based subscriber services.
Yukon Telephone is deploying the VP3500 in its Whittier Central
Office as a first step towards an all-IP network. Other platforms
evaluated prior to the selection of Metaswitch included switches
from Taqua, Gluon and CopperCom. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Galileo,
Rosetta Futures Loom Large For ESA
So far,
it has been a difficult year for the European Space Agency (ESA).
Problems with the launch of the Rosetta scientific mission as well
as continuing questions over the future of the Galileo satellite
navigation project have made things far from easy for ESA. The delay
of the Rosetta mission, which had been expected after the dramatic
launch failure of the Ariane 5 rocket in December, has been
particularly costly for ESA. Rosetta can no longer rendezvous with
its original target, Comet Wirtanen.

Mobile Web-Services - Forewarned is Forearmed
Web-services have had a slow launch over the last 12 months and they
struggle to see widespread uptake. The EAI market has been
disappointing, but the lack of back-end integration poses a large
hurdle for many companies, especially those turning thoughts to
mobile solutions. Throwing mobile web-services into the pot may seem
obvious given the shared technologies unifying these themes, but
Datamonitor remains skeptical about the short-term future of a
market.

TANANA, ALASKA SELECTS @CONTACT TO PROVIDE SATELLITE INTERNET
CONNECTIVITY FOR COMMUNITY HIGH-SPEED ACCESS
Yukon Telephone in Tanana, Alaska has chosen @CONTACT™as their
provider of Internet Access service for the local ISP services.
Lacking viable terrestrial options in the interior of Alaska for
high-speed connectivity to the Internet backbone, Tanana sought
the most robust satellite platform to support future services.
Yukon Telephone is one of Alaska's first remote ISP's to
successfully build out a cable modem system. After extensive
research into provider options they chose @contact services as
the most practical way to maximize their infrastructure
investment. They now provide high-speed cable modem service to
approximately 40 users including the Tanana Tribal Council.
